Teacher empowerment programmes in Utharakhand

A. Mohammed Kabir, K.Yatheesh Kumar Rai

Uttarakhand is the land of gods, the home of Himalayas and truly a paradise on earth. The fresh air, the pure water, the chilling snow, the adversing mountains, the scenic beauty, the small villages, the simpler people and a tougher lifesytle is what that distinguishes Uttarakhand from rest of the world. Earlier, the state was known as "Devbhumi" meaning "the land of god.

Idukki DIET conducted a study about the teacher empowerment programmes in Utharakhand. All teachers in the sate are getting 20 days of training each year. Trainings are conducted in vacations and also during other months. Cluster centers are arranged in various senior secondary schools. Principal of this school is administrative officer responsible for the cluster centre. Teachers with higher qualification are appointed as resource persons or trainers for training the teachers in the cluster centres. These resource persons with higher qualifications are getting better remunerations. The cluster trainings are not arranged on mass basis on a particular day. Teachers of various classes and subjects are called to the cluster center for the training in different days. Monitoring of the teacher training is directly conducted by the Principal of the concerned cluster centre school.

Activity oriented teaching learning strategies are adopted in the classrooms of the state. They follow card system in primary classes. Maximum importance is given to group based learning activities. Attempts have been done to make the teaching learning processes more child oriented. Teacher’s role is reduced to the minimum level. Though teaching learning strategies changed in to activity oriented method, sufficient teaching learning materials and other supporting facilities are not available in most of the schools. Class room facilities for conducting activity oriented classrooms are also not available in most schools. Similarly, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities are still needed to be improved in most schools. But the state is trying to achieve the maximum in the field of education by practising what they preach.
